Apprenticeship Training

Apprenticeship Training is a proven strategy that combines theoretical instruction with on-the-job training to prepare high quality, skilled workers to meet the demands of a competitive economy.

What does the NECE provide in the process?
The NECE will:
  • Provide course information and books to participants
  • Maintain and update program curricula and deliver courses either online, face-to-face or through self-study:
    • Online: Courses typically include a textbook and are broken into instructional units that contain reading assignments, lectures, videos, resource sections and/or self-checks
    • Face to Face: Courses are taught onsite
    • Self-study: Course materials are supplied that include instructional materials and self-checks within each chapter/unit.
  • Assess students with an online final exam for each course.
  • Assist in keeping the apprentices on track
  • Provide course completion documentation including final exam and certificate of completion
 
 
What are the costs for a typical apprenticeship program?
Costs for individuals enrolled in apprenticeship programs can vary between $3,000 - $10,000 per apprentice per year depending on total number of courses taken.

APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING TRACKS

The following are the available apprenticeship training tracks offered by the NECE.  Suggested courses with course descriptions are included in this NECE Apprenticeship Course Descriptions document.
Metering Technician
The Metering Technician Apprenticeship Training Track prepares employees to work with the necessary expertise in revenue watt-hour meter maintenance. This includes calibration, repair and testing of single and poly-phase self-contained and transformer-rated meters, installation and verification of transformer-rated meters, and modification and troubleshooting of electric meters.
Relay-Apparatus Technician
The Relay Apparatus Technician Apprenticeship Training Track prepares employees to work with expertise in system protection systems and substation apparatus.  These training areas allow Relay Apparatus Technicians to perform the duties of both System Protection Technicians and Substation Electricians in areas where widely dispersed substations do not sufficient workloads to justify autonomous system protection and substation electrician crews with commuting distances from a maintenance base.
Substation Electrician
The Substation Electrician Apprenticeship Training Track prepares employees to work with the necessary expertise in substation apparatus maintenance procedures. This includes testing, adjusting, modifying and repairing substation buswork, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, reactors, battery banks, grounding systems and operating air compressors. Substation Electrician Apprentices will learn the mathematic calculations of basic electrical relationships that are applicable to accomplish their assigned duties.
System Protection Technician
The primary function of the System Protection Technician is to maintain the protective relaying systems high levels of accuracy and reliability to ensure electric service continuity and preserve the operational integrity of the power delivery system from the generator to the customer. The System Protection Technician Apprenticeship Training Track prepares employees to work with the necessary expertise in electric utility protective relaying maintenance procedures
Telecommunications
The Telecommunications Apprenticeship program prepares employees to work with the necessary expertise in electric utility telecommunications maintenance procedures.  This includes digital communication systems, power systems, mobile radio, telecommunications, and management systems and software.
Mechanical Maintenance
The Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship Training Track prepares employees to work as entry level maintenance mechanics.  Content includes installation, maintenance and repairing of industrial equipment, blueprint and instruction manual reading, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Water Operations Specialist
The Water Operations Specialist Apprenticeship Training Track prepares employees to work as Water Systems Operations Specialists. Contents include basics of laboratory procedures and water chemistry, impurities, equipment overview, treatment processes, softening, disinfection, distribution, maintenance, basic electronics, and instrumentation and control. 
North Dakota Rural Water Systems Apprenticeship
BSC has partnered with the North Dakota Rural Water Systems Association to offer the Water Systems Operations Specialists Apprenticeship.  This apprenticeship program is comprised of non-credit courses from BSC in addition to on-the-job training, related instruction and paid work experience.  The non-credit courses from BSC are offered in a flexible, online format that enables you to maintain your work schedule.  Individuals interested in a career in the drinking water industry are encouraged to contact  for more information.
